Coaching for Endurance

Kimberism: “All progress is precarious, and the solution of one problem brings us face to face with another problem.” Martin Luther King Jr.

Coaches are often thought to help people set goals and accomplish a plan. Although there are aspects of coaching that can be useful in this manner, I have found that many people are in a place where they need to be coached around accepting themselves beyond their external accomplishments.

It has been said that we have built a society that is inherently structured to applaud externals such as education, wealth, power and celebrity. The clincher is that all of those things are destined to perish. In a day when more and more people are being stripped of external merit through layoffs and unemployment, it is paramount to uncover ones internal value. Imagine if society was structured in a way that placed value on that which was enduring.

We each possess weighty and enduring values that cannot be measured based on trinkets, or a bank account. If you find you are merely measuring or reducing your life to outward accomplishments, try pulling back to see the larger scheme of things. Why not take a step up and try evaluating your enduring qualities.

Make a list of all the core qualities you possess that will not fade, or tarnish with time, qualities that no one can take from you. Keep this list posted somewhere where you will see it. Reflect often on your inner value, rather than externals.

As you begin the New Year with goals and agendas in mind, spend equal time determining how you want to enrich the inner wealth you possess. Check out our new program Heart through Art beginning this month.

Making 2012 A Year of Growth

Kimberism: Love of life is a beautiful thing!

A young child learning to eat table food for the first time, or take her first wobbly steps, needs the nurture and support that encourages her to walk and eventually run. You don’t drill and force what will organically develop over time. You offer yummy scraps of food that can be gobbled up with glee and a gentle hand of assistance.

As we move into new territory as adults we need a similar kind of nurture that allows room to spread out into what will be. When my four children where born at home during the delivery process I was allowed the wonderful freedom to roam around as I liked. Taking new ground and allowing new things to be birthed in life also depends on the internal freedom to explore and expand.

As we begin the New Year it is easy to push ahead with goals and plans forsaking the natural flow, or organic process. However, after coaching many people who hit the wall in 2011 with their contrived efforts for success, they now understanding the importance of not birthing a vision prematurely. A vision will only be able to be maintained if the foundation is in place to sustain it.

There is a natural process of healing, rebuilding and morphing that takes place in life. Although painful and wearisome at times, it can be a beautiful, organic process if given to the creative flow.

My recommendation for 2012 is to invest in the work necessary to secure a solid foundation in which to build your dreams upon.

  • Determine what a successful year would look like to you and set your intention around that
  • Some need to invest internally in proportion to external investments and vise versa
  • Seek a year of balance, determine what that looks like for you
  • Commit to growth with clear, small, attainable goals and objectives
  • Set in place accountability through coaching, mentoring, or support that will move you forward
  • Live true to your values
  • No matter what season you’re in, sprinkle it with fun

New Language

Kimbersism: “Everything has beauty, but not everyone sees it.” Confucius

For years I’ve had an on going love affair with beautiful chairs. In a difficult a transitional season in my life chairs became the living metaphor for the changes I encountered. During this period every room I entered led me into an encounter with a voluptuous chair. As if spotlights were directing me I was drawn to unique pieces that oozed beauty. I stumbled upon curved legs, slanted backs, plump cushions, sensual fabrics that somehow told a story in their worn loveliness. I purchased several chairs that accompanied me as I embraced the shattered spaces of my heart.

Widowhood reshaped me and varied tattered, but lovely, one-of-a-kind chairs mirrored the door way of acceptance I learned to walk through. Tragedy and transition rarely feel sexy, yet with the right perspective radiate beautiful hues. Life and my chairs speak about passion, love, and risk. What one of us doesn’t carry those markings of life?

My chair with the brilliant purple fabric, and iridescent alphabet letters could be the most vivid of them all. It radiates a childlike eagerness and the risk of learning bold new language.

How can you expand your definition of beauty by owning whatever season you are living in today? Practice embracing the unspoken hues that radiate beauty from your life.

Paper Plates Saved My Life!

Kimberism: ”Simplicity is the ultimate sophistications.” Leonardo Da Vinci

During the years I was a single mom I learned to let go of a lot of control. I moved from desiring a world of pristine perfection to the regular use of paper plates. Instead of being concerned with esthetics I was simply happy to get dinner on the table.

During that season while managing my many roles and responsibilities, paper plates helped me to maximize my time and energy. Although I don’t regularly use paper plates to date, I have adopted the principal behind them; Look for areas in life that can be simplified and by all means simplify!

What do you need to let go of so you can enjoy and care for the more important aspects of your life?

Fortitude, Dude!

Kimberism: “I am not afraid of storms for I am learning how to sail my ship.” Louisa May Alcott

In California we have strong seasonal winds known as Santa Anas. The day after purchasing rose bushes for our yard unusually strong Santa Ana winds blew in knocking down power lines and trees in various areas across Los Angeles. As the winds shook our house, rattled our doors and blew on our new rose bushes I was surprised the next day to discover that our roses were in fact quite sturdy and held on through the powerful winds. However, ever last pedal on my Bougainvillea was scattered across our yard.

How well do you come through the powerful storms in your life? Many storms in my life have knocked me on my rear and left me with my feet flailing over my head. However, it’s really not about how good you look, but whether or not you endure your wind-blown seasons, so you can enjoy the bloom time.

Pruning is a natural occurrence in nature and in life. A good gardener knows the necessity of cutting back a plants growth, so that its future growth will be maximized. The storms in our lives can produce the same results.

Although you may feel akin to a bare Bougainvillea after harsh winds, the winds may in fact be priming you for rapid growth and fruitfulness. When life deals you a harsh hand and you feel supremely wind-blown, remember that every flourishing garden endured a season of pruning at one time or another. Gird up your fortitude, get back on your feet and watch for new growth!
