Don’t let me miss one pulse of my own heartbeat, not the flex to a taskmasters push, or the wobble to a skyscraper’s posing. I must beat to my own rhythm; must know love.

Wake me slowly, as I smell that sweetness of a heart coming to life, as I abandon the old shackles and meet the sunrise. I grasp life in its fullness; you living in me. Wake me slowly, so I can hear my song, and sing my freedom.

Wake me slowly as I bask in the river where beauty tells its story; a splash and a girl’s bliss is reawakened, re-commissioned. Wake me slowly so I can remember that I soar.

When starting off a new year we often hear statements about goal setting and action. However, prior to establishing goals or action it is important to know what season you are in.

Just as a farmer knows the season for planting, he also understands that there are times when the land must rest. When in a season of rest, asserting great bouts of man power only hinders and frustrates. It doesn’t alter the season.

As a baby is tucked away in isolation being fully formed in the mother’s womb, we too can find ourselves in seasons of rest and preparation for what is to be birthed.

What season are you in?

I start 2013 not with a thrust of manpower, goals and action, but with continued yielding to the process of transition. I begin 2013 assisting the divine creation taking place in my life, knowing that the process is internal long before it becomes external. If we do it the other way around it will be anything but enduring. We will surely forfeit the greater, by settling for the lesser.

So I give myself to a space where my head rests and my heart is awakened. I quiet my soul and open my spirit to receive revelation and illumination in heavenly partnership that will lead to further transformation.

Yes, I have a book ready to go to print, programs to implement, coaching to be done, and action looming in the distance, yet in this moment I give way to a season of rest, transition, and inner preparation. I am walking the walk that I support and coach others in doing. Follow along on the journey for 2013, the season of art and the untamed heart!

Sometimes it’s a long road to one’s heart. You think you see your heart and are living from your beauty only to discover it’s only partially lit. The heart is the journey and one day or another we will all be challenged to recognize and become fully acquainted with her.

This is no drive through acquisition, no lunch hour fix. This is the push and pull and tearing of colliding worlds. The loudest or most demanding make think they have a leg up, but they never win. Vibrato and ego is no match for the heart. She will only speak to those listening, who cease striving and who will enter into rest.

I am in a season when I am returning to my heart, recognizing that something had died and needed to be reawakened, realizing that I couldn’t sing and I’ve always sung.

Disappointment forged walls of protection that I wasn’t even aware were there. Yet, as I’ve given my heart attention, I marvel to see the unhinging and unbolting of the beams that held up those walls, those grabs for non-sustaining joy. That’s why I took this year off, and why I am just now beginning to hear what my heart is telling me.

Last night I had a dream about a beautiful pastors wife, lovely in every way. I’ve often thought how I did not envy her position and imagined her reticence of one more person tugging at her, and taking from her. Hearts grow weary from that kind of wear.

In the dream she was showing me a drawer filled with her beautiful jewelry collection. I noticed however, that amidst the few fine pieces of jewelry there were many imitations and cheap trinkets. This surprised me.

When I woke up I realized how much we all resemble this woman. We possess beauty, but we also smear on makeup, and in many ways fill our lives with cheap imitations. We betray our heart every time we fill our internal drawer with them.

Whether we over expose our heart and dash to make adjustments, pull back and cover up, wall her in when she wants out, banish her, put her in awkward situations where she is not honored, dance a jig, bow to tradition and rituals, or ideas that leave her empty, all she really wants is relationship and love. We know very little about caring for her, and so we often try to satisfy her with cheap imitations of the real thing.

Ego strives to fill up, while the heart remains empty. She is the one calling out, “ego will never satisfy you!” She groans. I feel her groaning and I am listening.

She is the one that knows the truth if we will be still long enough to listen. Walls will come down, new pathways will emerge and the sense of singing will begin to reawaken, as we cease to betray her with imitations of real love.

When I taught elementary and high school art classes I made a quick observation. When introducing a project using various shaped recyclable containers and cartons for making intriguing animals, most children didn’t even blink before ideas were popping and animals were coming to life. However, there was one exception. The children that spent their free time in front of the television, computer, or video games, rather than outside creating forts and alternative worlds, struggled with imagining and play. They were unusually self-conscious, stuck in their head and feared making mistakes.

It seems equally true today in an adult world. Those that allow themselves to move out of their heads away from stimuli that is force feed, or passively consumed are able to tap into the deep reservoirs of creativity within.

If you struggle with seeing yourself as creative, or feel blocked, why not act like a child, get out of your head and open up the world of imagining and making room for the multitude of creative genius that actually resides in you!

Take one small step today to make room for your childlike creativity to be released. What will it be?

Do it annually. ” Donald Rumsfeld

“Is it dead?” was the question that popped into my head, somehow acknowledging a similar camaraderie with the bare branches on a sparse looking tree? Then I heard in my spirit, “Its important to know the times and the seasons.”

Years ago my bedroom window overlooked the corner where two streets met. Outside my window I could see the street signs named, Bearmore and Palace. During my widowhood when I looked out the window and saw those signs, instead of dreading a season of what often felt like confinement, I choose to shift my perspective to being tucked away in a palace in preparation for a season of fruitful.

Its important to know what season your in. Often we look for fruit out of season. During a winter season its time for pruning. It’s not the time for fruitfulness, but the precursor for a fruitful season.

Do you need to look at your seasons of seeming barrenness differently? When you feel as if you can’t see anything happening on the horizon, imagine that you’re tucked away in the palace quarters in preparation for your season of fruitfulness. How can you shift your perspective?

My friend Suzanne shared with me about taking her four year old niece for a ride in her convertible. The curiosity that emerged over a Transformer like car kept her young niece excitedly spouting questions, taking in the azure sky, while her hands waved in roller coaster style. We can learn something from the innocence of childlike wonder.

Imagine if we faced the journey of life with the same childlike excitement over the adventure, put the top down on our cares; let our wind-blown hair sail as we coasted for the ride.

What needs to be adjusted in your perspective to see life as a ride, a game and an adventure? What control do you need to let go of to enjoy the ride today?

Recently upon my morning walk I discovered a route that takes me under the most wonderful underpass. Normally I wouldn’t have considered this brief part of my trek scenically delightful and could have missing its value. However, I have discovered the most glorious part of my walk is when the traffic blazes through the underpass creating a thunderous noise. It is the perfect opportunity to scream, sing, or shriek at the top of my lungs! Then I continue my enthusiastic theme for the rest of the walk, whatever it may be. This combined with this season of artistic expression create the perfect vehicles to enjoy the scenery of life.

What a delight it is to let all of my pent up emotion come howling out from the depth of my being. My beautiful jaunts, vivid with California vegetation, sunshine, and concrete overpass creates fodder for some of my best ideas, now enhanced with screeching at the top of my lungs under the underpass.

What ways are you finding to scream under your own underpass? I would love to hear how you creatively let off steam and navigate through your own passage ways of life!

It’s easy to look around and measure oneself against others, according to external, monetary and superficial measurements. Yet when we do so, often we know nothing about the person’s inner world that we may have judged incorrectly. We probably make inaccurate judgments about celebrities every time we see them on television without knowing the truth about their lives.

What if we stopped for a moment and moved out of our own insecurities that caused us to grasp for check marks and measured our world by the actual wealth we do possess.

For instance, recently I woke up and wondered into the kitchen for my regular cup of morning tea where I stumbled upon a visitor sleeping on our sofa. I then moved back to the bedroom and bumped into my husband who had the same realization. For a moment I sighed at the thought of forced confinement in the bedroom and then it occurred to me that one of the most affluent areas in my life is often strewn across our sofas. My life is affluent with the hearts and lives of many young adults who have found sanctuary within our family. They are like jewels around my neck.

Although it may not be in your bank account, your perfect size 4 body, or influence in the government, where can you identify the mark of affluence in your life? If you need help join our Heart Through Art Program and unearth the buried treasure in your heart. For information check here.
