When I taught elementary and high school art classes I made a quick observation. When introducing a project using various shaped recyclable containers and cartons for making intriguing animals, most children didn’t even blink before ideas were popping and animals were coming to life. However, there was one exception. The children that spent their free time in front of the television, computer, or video games, rather than outside creating forts and alternative worlds, struggled with imagining and play. They were unusually self-conscious, stuck in their head and feared making mistakes.

Do it annually. ” Donald Rumsfeld

“Is it dead?” was the question that popped into my head, somehow acknowledging a similar camaraderie with the bare branches on a sparse looking tree? Then I heard in my spirit, “Its important to know the times and the seasons.”

Years ago my bedroom window overlooked the corner where two streets met. Outside my window I could see the street signs named, Bearmore and Palace. During my widowhood when I looked out the window and saw those signs, instead of dreading a season of what often felt like confinement, I choose to shift my perspective to being tucked away in a palace in preparation for a season of fruitful.

My friend Suzanne shared with me about taking her four year old niece for a ride in her convertible. The curiosity that emerged over a Transformer like car kept her young niece excitedly spouting questions, taking in the azure sky, while her hands waved in roller coaster style. We can learn something from the innocence of childlike wonder.

Imagine if we faced the journey of life with the same childlike excitement over the adventure, put the top down on our cares; let our wind-blown hair sail as we coasted for the ride.

What needs to be adjusted in your perspective to see life as a ride, a game and an adventure? What control do you need to let go of to enjoy the ride today?

Recently upon my morning walk I discovered a route that takes me under the most wonderful underpass. Normally I wouldn’t have considered this brief part of my trek scenically delightful and could have missing its value. However, I have discovered the most glorious part of my walk is when the traffic blazes through the underpass creating a thunderous noise. It is the perfect opportunity to scream, sing, or shriek at the top of my lungs! Then I continue my enthusiastic theme for the rest of the walk, whatever it may be. This combined with this season of artistic expression create the perfect vehicles to enjoy the scenery of life.

What a delight it is to let all of my pent up emotion come howling out from the depth of my being. My beautiful jaunts, vivid with California vegetation, sunshine, and concrete overpass creates fodder for some of my best ideas, now enhanced with screeching at the top of my lungs under the underpass.

What ways are you finding to scream under your own underpass? I would love to hear how you creatively let off steam and navigate through your own passage ways of life!

It’s easy to look around and measure oneself against others, according to external, monetary and superficial measurements. Yet when we do so, often we know nothing about the person’s inner world that we may have judged incorrectly. We probably make inaccurate judgments about celebrities every time we see them on television without knowing the truth about their lives.

What if we stopped for a moment and moved out of our own insecurities that caused us to grasp for check marks and measured our world by the actual wealth we do possess.

I took off for my morning walk feeling little energy or joy surrounding the task at hand. As I contemplated that reality something rose up in me and I began to command my body to agree with the choice I had made. I said, “You are strengthened in your inner man. You will be joyful” and suddenly without thought I began to sing about the reality I had chosen for myself.

By the time I returned home to my doorstep I felt energized, joyful and full of gleeful expectation. Are you choosing the reality you want or letting your current situation dictate your reality?

I am continuing on from my last post, Things that Make Your Heart Go Pitter Patter with another of my favorites, The Bucket List. However, lets just call it what it is, The Outlandish Big Dream List! I encourage you to make a list, or update an old one for the New Year too. Make your list as detailed as possible. Be bold, be courageous, be authentically you and be as outlandish as you dare to be. Don’t worry what others may think. Give yourself permission to dream big!

The next step of course would be to set in place the strategies, structures and support to see these things come to pass. Wishing will get you nowhere! Intentional action will carry you from where you are to where you desire to be. Make this a year of outlandish dreams and intentional growth.

Kimberism: “The future is always beginning now.” Mark Strand

The only way to truly live and grow in my estimation is to take risks, yet taking risks requires a great amount of faith and moxie. During seasons when we step out of the boat onto the waters of the unknown its easy to crave the security and comfort of the past. Risk taking is a process and with it comes varied emotions.

However, I have discovered that its necessary to let go of the security of the past to embrace the unfamiliar, wild and woolly taunts of the future. Although the future may at times seem harrowing, it holds unforeseen possibilities. If we keep looking over our shoulder at what was, we will miss what lies ahead.

Part of letting go for me comes through creative exercises, staying in the now, exercising faith and being honest about what I am letting go of. I need to be honest about my feelings of lack, having yet reached the promise of whats ahead. Acknowledging and letting go allow me to begin to hope and see into my unseen future. Below I’ve let you in on some of my “letting go” process that allows me to embrace what is new. Now take a minute to acknowledge and let go yourself.

I acknowledge what I crave and let go to embrace the future:

I crave popping over to snuggle up on a welcoming sofa, drinking hot tea and walking each other through life. I crave girl friend chatter, the kind that says you’re safe no matter what you’re going through.

I crave dinners out, ruckus laughter, movies, surprise gifts, soul exposure, mani-pedis, shopping, closet cleaning, deep conversation, inspirational and creative ventures, fun partnerships, savvy women wearing big girl panties some days and childlike authenticity the next, supportive prayer and the occasional tear stained cheeks met with the comfort of hand-holding-support. I crave longevity, where no one quits or walks away.

I crave the feeling of home, no ploys for positioning, no one pushing his or her agenda. I crave siting out on the patio, noshing on great food and conversation. I crave lost and new friendship.

I let go of what was to embrace all that is yet to be. I embrace newness as a welcomed friend. I plant my feet into today and say thank you to yesterday. I embrace the journey and the adventure of the here and now!

Kimberism: Internal abundance can’t co-exists with fear, worry, or bitterness.

The prospects of a New Year can create a slew of mixed emotions for many. Although one wants to hope for good things, unrealized dreams and past disappointments can serve to anchor one to past or current pain.

Every New Year I spend time waiting for revelation and insight for the season ahead. Interestingly this year I heard the word “hopelicious” in my spirit. Honestly, this past year was a constant exercise in faith. As soon my hope tank was filled something new came along to drain it. So instead of reeling with excitement, I pondered the word “hopelicious.”

But then following this first bit of encouragement I heard, “Faith is the vehicle that moves hope into a reality.” Now were talking! Faith is the industrial strength substance that is necessary to weather any storm and be carried from where we are into the unseen.

The dictionary describes hope as: the feeling that what is wanted can be had or that events will turn out for the best.

It also describes delicious as: very pleasing and delightful, especially to taste or smell.

The word “hopelicious” goes well with my current mode of visual inspiration; the cupcake! For months now cupcakes have appeared in much of my artwork. I now understand the metaphor that goes perfectly with “hopelicious!”

Although not everything turns out the way we want or think it should, I have found that in time most things turn out better than we could have imagined. Some of you may not believe that right not, but I have seen it with my own eyes. As a devastated widow my life was deliciously restored. And hope was the single greatest ingredient that carried me to my new destination. I chose to hope in a fresh new future and that is what I received. I made the decision and didn’t veer from it.

With 2011 behind us lets apprehend the “hopeliciousness” of 2012! How will you exercise your faith going forward, set a course and not veer from it? What delightful and scrumptious things are you hoping for in 2012? To truly be inspired and led into the world of “hopeliciousness” join the Heart through Art Coaching Group.
